Australia Day

What is Australia Day?

On Australia Day we celebrate all the things we love about Australia: land, sense of fair go, lifestyle, democracy, the freedoms we enjoy but particularly our people.

Australia Day is celebrated on the January 26 and commemorates the establishment of the first European settlement at Port Jackson, now part of Sydney, in 1788. It is an opportunity for Australians to come together to celebrate their country and culture. There are reflections on the achievements of the nation and explorations of way to make the country even better in the future. We celebrate and reflect the diverse society and landscape of the nation, and these are marked by community and family events, reflections on Australian history, official community awards, and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new immigrants into the Australian community.

My Country

The love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded lanes.
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins,
Strong love of grey-blue distance
Brown streams and soft dim skies
I know but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror –
The wide brown land for me!

A stark white ring-barked forest
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon.
Green tangle of the brushes,
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When sick at heart, around us,
We see the cattle die –
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady, soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the Rainbow Gold,
For flood and fire and famine,
She pays us back threefold –
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze.

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land –
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand –
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

Buy Australian And Support Local Producers

At Emu Ridge we are a proud, family owned business that produces and sells 100% pure Australian Eucalyptus Oil, as well as many other associated natural products.

Australian manufacturers, farmers, fishermen and processors make some of the best products in the world. By purchasing our goods, you’re not only supporting local jobs and our economy, but also getting great products you can trust.

The best way to identify genuine Australian goods is looking at the label. If the label says “Product of Australia” this guarantees that what you are purchasing is something that is truly Australian. Slogans such as “Made in Australia” and many others can quite often be very misleading. Buying locally produced products means you can have the confidence of knowing  that the products have had to meet high Australian standards, so they are of a superior quality and it is also nice to know that we are always only a phone call away if you have any questions.

We are proud to say that all of the eucalyptus oil we supply is 100% pure and 100% produced in Australia. It is produced in an environmentally sustainable manner, in a pristine environment. Did you know that 90% of the worlds eucalyptus oil these days is produced by countries like China and Brazil? They use an Australian species called The Tasmanian Blue Gum or ‘Eucalyptus globulus’and Radiata’. Unfortunately, if you buy your Eucalyptus oil from a pharmacy  or supermarket, it is more than likely not 100% pure and certainly not Australian produced. We don’t use any sprays or chemicals on our trees as they are native to our area, they are called the Kangaroo island Narrow Leaf Mallee or Eucalyptus cneorifolia. We can re-harvest our trees every one to two years, due to the fact that Eucalyptus Mallee trees always coppice new shoots, so  they are always generating new growth which is great for the environment.

So look on the side of the label for Product of Australia, and with Australia’s strict labelling regulations we must also have how many mLs per litre are in 1 litre of Eucalyptus oil, so our label also says 1000mL/l  (per litre) that way you know that it is 100%  pure. If its not on the label who knows what it is, or where it comes from!

Some deceptive brands even go as far as to write Produced by Australian Eucalyptus Trees!!! Yes but where!!

We hope this has helped you understand Australia’s labelling laws and we look forward to you supporting our business.

Killer Whales Hog Bay on Kangaroo Island

Killer Whales frolicking at Hog Bay beach

Beautiful time to come to Kangaroo Island if you love whale watching many species travel through from May till August. Don’t forget to call in and visit us at Emu Ridge on your visit!

KANGAROO Island residents were given a killer surprise recently, as six orca whales played in the water off Penneshaw.

Locals spotted the marine mammals, more commonly known as killer whales, tail slapping, rolling and playing at Hog Bay beach Penneshaw.

Hon Kyam Maher visits Kangaroo Island

We recently had the Honourable Kyam Maher and his family call in to visit Emu Ridge and listen to the issues we face within our business and  Kangaroo Island.

Kyam is the Minister for Manufacturing and Innovation – Minister for Automotive Transformation – Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation, Member of Legislative Council, Australian Labor Party

His question was what 3 things would improve your business or Kangaroo Island? My answers were, we need improved infrastructure on the island and help in producing more raw product so that we can keep up supply and demand our our eucalyptus oil:

  1. Improve our roads, if 4WD’s are not hired visitors are not allowed to drive on unsealed roads. This will increase our tourist numbers.
  2. Upgrade the airport,  this will improve competition in the tourism industry with more affordable flights this in turn will increase our tourist numbers.
  3. Produce more eucalyptus oil. By producing more oil we can cut out the imports, create more local jobs, which helps our economy, farming of our natural resources is better for the environment. See why buying local helps us here.
  4. Larry has always been passionate about the exploitation of all of our natural resources and sustainable farming on Kangaroo Island and the need for more responsible land management. In the below picture Larry shows the Minister a wallaby skin and tells him the story of how 100,000 wallabies are culled every year on Kangaroo Island and left to rot in the ground feeding the flies and feral cats, such a waste. In 1993 Larry worked with Michelle Leather and Macro Meats to prove it was viable to utilise our Tammar wallabies and he later received a Winston Churchill fellowship in 1998 to study the production, marketing and utilization of native flora and fauna. Unfortunately nothing has changed, government departments agreeing it is wasteful and then nothing happens. One day things will change. But this is another story!  This link is a great read about Eating Australia’s Skippy equals Sustainable Farming
P1040769

Natural resource, wallaby skin, our culled wallabies are all wasted and not utilized

Kyam is particularly passionate about ensuring that all South Australians are afforded the dignity that good, meaningful jobs provide, and that all South Australians are able to share in the opportunities and benefits this State offers. He has spoken on a wide range of issues including Aboriginal Affairs, equality, the importance of science in society, and the challenges facing regional and country communities.

Minister Kyam  his wife Carmel and their 3 boys enjoyed a lunch of local produce here  in our dining room at Emu Ridge consisting of local dips and sheep milk cheeses, Halloumi Cheese Entrée, and Mains, Fish and Chicken served with Suzanne Rose Potato Bake, Tretheweys steamed  broccoli and garlic and KI Honey roast carrots, local salad and Pudding and custard for dessert.

We hope the minister and his family enjoyed his time here and  lets hope his travels around the island has given him a  great insight of the view of local  Business’s.

Cheers Bev

Homemade Glass Cleaner

There are many great benefits when it comes to making your own cleaning products. Not only do they help you save money, but you also know exactly what’s in them. Our environment is filled with toxins and one of the biggest offenders in the toxin department is household cleaners.  At Emu Ridge we like to clean naturally and keep as many toxins as possible out of our home and workplace. This cleaner is completely non toxic so you feel safe using them around your children, pets and yourselves!

This homemade glass cleaner recipe is a simple, easy to make solution that uses everyday ingredients from around your home and works effectively. All you need is:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon dish washing liquid
  • 8 drops eucalyptus oil

P1040589E

Simply combine all the ingredients in an empty spray bottle and give your mixture a shake and it is ready to go! An old glass bottle is also great, we have a 1 litre glass apple cider vinegar bottle, you just need to get a spray top that fits it. We recommend using Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil, but our Lemon Myrtle can also be used, it has similar properties and a different fragrance. (Hint – recycled bottles don’t last long as Eucalyptus oil disolves some plastic parts inside the pump. We have found it best to buy a pump from our local Jasol agent they last forever)

Why Use Eucalyptus Oil Instead Of Other Oils?

Stops Streaking: Everybody hates those annoying streaks that are commonly left behind after washing your windows. Using eucalyptus oil in your cleaning mixture helps to prevent those annoying streak marks on your windows.

Stops Mirrors Fogging Up: There is nothing more annoying than going to look in the mirror and its all fogged up! Wiping down your mirrors with eucalyptus oil helps prevent mirrors from fogging up.

Helps Prevent Germs: This is handy for when you have dirty and grimy glass sliding doors. Children tend to put their hands and mouth all over the glass when opening sliding doors, so eucalyptus oil is great for stopping the spread of germs.

P1040595E

The dish washing detergent in this cleaner removes detergent residues and this can can be omitted once you have been cleaning with your natural cleaner. This cleaner has a strong smell but this will completely disappear once it dries. We use old newspapers to wipe the area we are cleaning, but you can use a microfiber cloth or old t-shirts work well to. Just avoid paper towels as they tend to leave lint on them.

Happy toxic free cleaning 🙂
