Sustainable Practices at Emu Ridge: Recycling for a Greener Future
At Emu Ridge, we’re committed to sustainability, and recycling is a key part of our efforts. As a business that ships products to customers both nationally and internationally, we’re always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact, reuse materials, and make sure our packaging process is as eco-friendly as possible.
Our Latest Eco-Friendly Addition: The Cardboard Shredder
We’re excited to introduce our newest sustainable tool – a cardboard shredder! This machine takes old cardboard and transforms it into recyclable packing material, perfect for protecting fragile products and shipping our online orders.
- Eco-Friendly: Transforms waste cardboard into reusable, sustainable packaging.
- Waste Reduction: Helps cut down on landfill waste while reducing handling hassles.
- Cost-Effective: Saves on packaging costs while providing secure packaging for our products.
With the cardboard shredder now in use, we’re thrilled to be able to reduce our environmental impact even further, all while maintaining the high quality of the products you love.

Recycling Packaging Materials
We’re proud to say that much of the packaging we use for our online orders is recycled! We partner with local businesses to source used materials, helping us minimize waste and give things a second life. For instance, KI Crash Repairs, our local crash repair shop, provides us with used bubble wrap, while M10 Hardware helps with empty screw and bolt containers. Larger boxes come from our friends at Josh Shepard Electrical and Home Hardware, and occasionally, locals drop off unwanted packing materials. It’s a wonderful community effort that makes a big difference!
How We Handle Your Order
Ever wondered how we pack your order when you shop with us online? See our blog HERE which walks you through the steps we take to ensure every order is packed thoughtfully and sustainably, when you make an online order here at Emu Ridge on beautiful Kangaroo Island.
Meet Our Wonderful Volunteers
These two lovely volunteers are helping us with the recycling process! Candy, a WWOOFer from Toronto, Canada, and Madison, from the US, are both experiencing Aussie life while giving back through their volunteer work at Emu Ridge. They’re busy cutting up all our recycled bubble wrap to reuse for packing. If you’re interested in learning more about volunteering opportunities through WWOOF Australia, or Workaway, click the links to find out more about these incredible programs.
Wrapping with Newspaper
In addition to reusing bubble wrap, we wrap our products (both in-store and for online orders) in unpurchased newspapers from our local Newsagent. This is a simple yet effective way to reuse materials and reduce waste.
Recycled Materials in Our Building
Did you know that much of our site at Emu Ridge was built using recycled materials? Our retail shop, for example, was constructed using materials from our old shearing shed. It’s just one more way we try to live our sustainability values, from the ground up!
Repurposing Eucalyptus Leaves
After distilling our eucalyptus oil, we don’t let any of the boiled leaves go to waste. We reuse them as fuel in our fire and sell the remaining mulch as a sustainable product for gardeners.
Join Us in Our Recycling Journey
At Emu Ridge, we’re always looking for ways to combine practicality with sustainability. From recycled bubble wrap to our new cardboard shredder, we’re constantly working to reduce waste and tread lightly on the environment.
We’re grateful for the support of local businesses like KI Crash Repairs, M10 Hardware, Josh Shepard Electrical, and Home Hardware, as well as volunteers through WWOOF Australia and Workaway, who help make these sustainable efforts possible.
Let’s continue working together for a greener future!
