Anzac Day, A Day of Remembrance for Australia and New Zealand

“Australia’s ANZAC Sons” by Peter Baskerville

Tread softly now this hallowed ground
but wear the dust with pride,
for mingled with this ancient soil
our Aussie ash abides.
To sense the golden wattle sprig,
to see the red gums tall,
embodied in their crimson flow
our land and nature call.

Though beaten in a senseless raid
the world’s respect was won,
an enemy turned to friend indeed
our sons and theirs now one.
Eight thousand souls departed here
their flesh, a richer earth
that’s greened these hills for 90 years
their spirit, a nation’s birth.

A heritage won, a legacy given
that’s stood the test of time,
of mateship, grit and courage clear,
these bells forever chime.
Whilst larrikin and defiant they
the ultimate price have paid,
no greater honor now bestowed:
The ‘Anzac Spirit’ displayed.

This beautiful sunrise was taken by one of our lovely staff Madison Lierich, I thought it was very fitting for this Anzac Day – At the going down of the Sun and in the Morning, we will Remember Them…… from all of us at Emu Ridge.

WHAT IS EMU RIDGE EUCY MULCH

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch is a sterilized, organic leaf mulch made from the leaves and twigs of the Kangaroo Island Narrow Leaf Mallee (Eucalyptus cneorifolia). It can be applied at any time of the year.

It comes from the process of distilling Emu Ridge Pure Eucalyptus Oil where the leaves and twigs are sterilized in steam for four hours which removes tannins and the oil.  Sterilization kills weed seeds and insects, ensuring a pure, clean, organic leaf mulch.

It has the natural look of a forest floor and a lovely bushland fragrance.

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch comprises 100% natural plant material and contains Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Manganese, Iron and trace elements.  It has a pH range of 5.8 – 6.5.

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch allows good air and water circulation, encouraging better root growth.  It absorbs the rain whilst preventing it from compacting the surface soil and breaks down into a rich, friable, organic humus after two or three years. It is a light and porous  material which is heavy enough not to blown about in windy conditions.

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch is tightly packed in grain bags, cement bags, trailers or trucks.  No order is too large or small.  Price is determined by volume.

WHERE TO USE EMU RIDGE EUCY MULCH

 Native Gardens

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch spread to a depth of 30 to 70mm is extremely suitable for native gardens as the natural habitat of many natives is a surface covering of leaves and twigs.  Most natives prefer a light sandy soil and Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch stops the soil caking after watering or being washed away.  Also, by keeping out lights, suppresses weed growth, reducing the tiresome work associated with weed control.

Shade, Ornamental and Fruit Trees

A 30 to 70mm layer of Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch helps keep roots cool, the soil damp and moisture available for plants during hot, dry and windy weather.  It is particularly useful for fibrous rooted trees such as citrus.

Shrub and Flower Beds

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch given as a 30 to 50mm dressing, helps keep soil temperature constant.

In summer, Eucy Mulch stops reflected heat scorching plants and in winter, it acts as an insulator against biting winds and driving rain.

It is excellent around Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Camellias.

HOW TO USE EMU RIDGE EUCY MULCH

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch is easier to spread around plants when it is damp and liable.  Simple hose or wet the mulch a day or two before application.  Water the ground well before spreading the mulch.  If the soil is compacted, loosen the surface first to allow air and water to penetrate.  You will obtain better weed control if weeds are chipped before Eucy Mulch is spread.

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch, like all mulches, should be kept away from the base of plant stems to stop the development of collar rot.  This is particularly important with seedlings and native plants.

At the time of application, it is worthwhile applying a light sprinkling of a nitrogenous fertilizer such as blood and bone, to avoid any possibility of an imbalance of soil nutrients.

WHAT EMU RIDGE EUCY MULCH DOES

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch keeps soil cooler in summer and warmer in winter, improving the environment for root development and plant growth.  Encourages worm activity too.

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch reduces watering as it stops evaporation, allows more surface roots to develop, reduces wilting and protects young seedlings from drying out.

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch reduces weed growth. Weeds that do grow are spindly and easily removed.  The thicker layer of Eucy Mulch the more complete the weed control.

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch allows the soil to breathe, reduces surface soil compaction, stops erosion and stimulates deeper root development.

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch improves the condition of both sandy and clay soils.  As Eucy Mulch decomposes, it adds humus and valuable nutrients to the soil.  This improves soil structure, allows better drainage and prevents nutrients being washed from the soil.

Emu Ridge Eucy Mulch is the ideal mulch as it is organic, coarse and porous, controls weeds, holds water, is non-toxic and forms an attractive and natural ground cover.

The FH Fauldings GMC Truck at Emu Ridge

Here’s a wonderful pic of our old GMC truck taken my Michele Williams. I’m sure it’s in many people’s albums, a photographers dream! The truck was origionally purchased and owned by FH Fauldings who used to own our property, once it was sold in 1952 for the soldier settler scheme the truck was purchased by Mr. Randal Turner a local farmer down the road. (No relation just the same same). Once he retired he gave it back to us, to lay to rest where it’s life began. Believe it or not Larry drove it back to Emu Ridge!

We love to share our history here at Emu Ridge. Here’s a short video from when FH Fauldings used to own our farm. This was a documentary produced in the 1930’s. For more history about the Eucalyptus oil industry on Kangaroo Island and Emu Ridge see this link.
