Dry Mouth and Emu Oil

Bev, dry mouth, Emu Oil, Emu Ridge Kangaroo Island

I was quite shocked to read how many people like me are affected by dry mouth, apparently it affects hundreds of millions of people. It is a chronic and mostly irreversible condition also known as xerostomia.

For me and my personal experience, I have dry mouth on one side due to nerve damage caused from surgery removing a brain tumour. I tried many recommended things, all horrible. Until I tried Emu Oil, I just use my airless pump, I put some on my finger and put in along my bottom and top gums! What a difference it makes, no taste, its natural, no nasty chemicals and makes my mouth feel great! I can go all night without the uncomfortable dry mouth feeling. All I can say is it works very well for me. I also highly recommend  the lip balm for the same reasons i use this morning, noon and night! All the best to you regards ~Bev ~

What causes Dry Mouth?

Your mouth is dry because your salivary glands do not make enough saliva. Why? There could be different reasons. The majority of people suffer from dry mouth due to:

  • Side effects caused by medicines
  • Disease
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Nerve damage

Why is Saliva So Important?

Saliva does more than keep our mouth wet

Saliva acts in the mouth like oil does in an engine.

Tongue and lips movements are not smooth without enough saliva. Thus one finds it hard to speak and chew food, especially dry and hard food.

Worse than that, one may not get the needed nutrients if chewing and swallowing certain foods are hampered.

In addition, tooth decay or other infections in the mouth can develop.

How does saliva keep us healthy?

  •  helps digesting food
  • protects teeth from decay
  • lubricates the mouth and allows free movement of the jaws and tongue
  • prevents infection by controlling bacteria and fungi in the mouth
  • prevents infection by controlling bacteria and fungi in the mouth
  •  makes it possible for you to chew and swallow
  • prevents bad breath

What should I do or not do if my Mouth is Dry?

  • Sip often water or sugarless drinks.
  • Avoid drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, and some sodas. Caffeine can dry out the mouth.
  • Sip water or a sugarless drink during meals. This will make chewing and swallowing easier. It may also improve the taste of food.
  • Be aware that spicy or salty foods may cause pain in a dry mouth.
  • Chew sugarless gum or suck on sugarless hard candy to stimulate saliva flow; citrus, cinnamon or mint-flavored candies are good choices.
  • Don’t use tobacco or alcohol. They dry out the mouth.
  • Use a humidifier at night.

How do I care for my teeth when I have a Dry Mouth?

With a dry mouth, you need to be extra careful to keep your teeth healthy. Make sure you:

  • Gently brush your teeth at least twice a day.
  • Floss your teeth every day.
  • Use toothpaste with fluoride in it.
  • Avoid sticky, sugary foods. If you do eat them, brush immediately afterwards.
  • Visit your dentist for a check-up at least twice a year. Your dentist might give you a special fluoride solution that you can rinse with to help keep your teeth healthy.
