Zentangle drawing is something I really enjoy doing, it’s a simple, calming, no pressure drawing experience that anyone can do anywhere, at anytime.
The initial way to create with the Zentangle Method is by using a pencil, a black pen, and a white 3.5 inch (89mm) paper square called a tile.
And it is a lovely ceremony to do this, with 8 Basic Steps:
- Gratitude and Appreciation
- Corner Dots
- Border
- String
- Tangle
- Shade
- Initial and Sign
- Appreciate again.
You make the tangle – a predefined set of simple strokes that makes a pattern in a focused manner, which once you start, takes you to that Zen place. As you slowly draw the lines while holding the pen comfortably, it all comes together in a very satisfying way.
Anyone can do it, at any age, even if they have never done any art work before. Often people are happily surprised at their results.
It sparks creativity and often leads to other creative endeavours. You can keep making the tiles, or make bigger ones, or draw them in a sketch book, or create a ZIA (Zentange Inspired Art). You can go wherever you want with it. You can invent your own new tangles (you wouldn’t believe how many are ‘out there’).
It has turned into a world wide art movement. And has healing effects for children, adults, the elderly and people with physical and mental conditions.
It definitely has a Spiritual dimension to it.
The lovely American couple who started Zentangle, Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts had no idea it would lead to what it is today when they formulated the Zentangle Method back in 2003. They are still happily continuing with it today, and it has turned into a family business that is continually evolving.
It’s wonderful to see how it has progressed over the years, and how it is helping so many people around the world.
