How to rid your dogs of Fleas and Ticks, and it works for us too! 100% Australian Eucalyptus Oil

Flea and Tick repellent for your pets:

One of the most common problems your pets may be dealing with is annoying fleas and other parasites. They can cause great discomfort for your pets as well as health problems such as skin irritations, allergies, anaemia and even death if not treated.

Chemical treatments may get rid of fleas, but they can also cause side effects such as breathing problems, tremors, vomiting, skin irritations and permanent nerve damage. Using natural remedies such as Emu Ridge eucalyptus oil is a safe alternative to chemicals, as well as keeping your pet’s coat healthy and vibrant, because the fleas and other insects hate the smell of eucalyptus oil. You may need to apply the oil more often than you would chemical formulas, but it will effectively and safely repel fleas without hurting your pet.

What To Do:

  1. Begin by shampooing your pet. Mix 5 drops of eucalyptus oil into approximately 250 ml of a natural, no-tear pet shampoo. Use an eyedropper to measure the oil and mix well.

  2. Start the bath water to get it to a good warm temperature. Place a cotton ball into each ear of your pet to avoid water and soap getting in, and then wet your pet’s coat thoroughly and completely.

  3. Bathe your pet as you normally would with the eucalyptus shampoo, creating a nice rich lather from head to toe. Be careful not to get shampoo in the eyes. Rinse your pet and repeat with the eucalyptus shampoo. This time, rinse extremely well.

  4. Towel-dry your pet from excess water and follow with a thorough blow-drying.

For added protection after and between baths, you can make a repellent:

1 cup of water, 2 cups of distilled white vinegar, 2 teaspoons of vegetable or almond oil and 3 drops of eucalyptus oil  then put the mixture into a spray bottle. Mist your pet lightly with the mixture every so often and let it air-dry. You can also mix in a few spoonfuls of lemon juice, which will repel ticks and fleas.

HINT- This deterrent also works for flies and other insects as well. Spray onto the pet’s dry coat, staying away from sensitive areas including eyes, nose, mouth, and genitals. When outdoors for an extended period, spray this solution on 2-3 times per day. Don’t add the eucalyptus oil for cats, it is great for horses, dogs, goats etc. This recipe below is tried and tested to.

You can also use a cotton wool ball soaked in Eucalyptus oil and gently dab behind your pet’s ears, along their back and under there arms, and then groom, this is a great deterrent.

Keeping your carpets parasite free. Make a simple flea repellent carpet powder by mixing 1 cup of cornstarch with 15 drops of eucalyptus oil and dust this powder all over the carpets, leave for 15 minutes and then vacuum. A parasite free home  will help your dogs be safe from further reinfection of fleas.

Eucalyptus oil can also be rubbed into your pet’s collar to work as a natural flea collar. Below is a great recipe to deter fleas with this natural flea collar. Reapply approx every 2 weeks.

The eucalyptus oil has been proven effective in most cases, but you may have to alter the recipe to find the best solution to meet your pet’s particular needs.

DETERRENT FOR BEDDING & THE HOME: Use a eucalyptus or tea tree dilution in watering can to wash floors, soak pet’s kennel and favourite sleeping patches on sand or paving or doormats etc.

Rinse all bedding after washing with strong dilution of eucalyptus or tea tree oil (with a dash of vinegar to

mix the oils into the water) and dry without rinsing. Repeat at least monthly.

Remember to vacuum carpets well and frequently. The flea life cycle is about a month in the summer, so keep up intensive treatment for at least a month.

Eucalyptus oil is also handy for your dog in other areas to:

  • Skin therapy: It can be useful to help soothe skin after insect bites, stings, and skin rashes.

  • Antiseptic qualities: Its disinfectant properties can be useful for skin problems and also when cleaning bedding. Add a few drops of oil in the wash works wonders.

  • Antiviral and anti-inflammatory.

  • Works as an expectorant.

  • Respiratory therapy: Good for relief of chest congestion.  Its inhalant properties help to combat respiratory problems such as sinus infections and bronchitis.

  • Fragrance: Eucalyptus can also be very effective against pet odor.

Risks of Using Eucalyptus Oil on Your Dog

  • Only use 100% pure, not all oils are equal!

  • Be aware of the label, its the same rules for dogs as it is for us. Dogs are more sensitive. Keep essential oils out of their reach, and when applying essential oils avoid the mouth region, eyes and mucus membranes.

  • Its advisable to be careful using eucalyptus oil or any essential oil undiluted for your pet. In its pure form it can burn sensitive areas the same as people.

  • Do not use eucalyptus oil for cats the same as you would for dogs, cats LICK their fur so it can get straight into their digestive systems and cause toxicity.

  •  Introduce any oils slowly, and always be sure to monitor your pet’s behavior and symptoms for any signs of distress or discomfort.

  • Remember smaller dogs need alot less than a larger dog.

We have used it on all of our dogs over the past 26 years, it has been very successful and our dogs never had any side effects.

DIY Eucalyptus Shower Discs

Shower discs are a great way to clear your sinuses as well as keeping  your bathroom smelling fresh. These all-natural eucalyptus vapour discs are simple and easy to make, they are also non-toxic, so they are safe to use around children and pets.

Each year we love having children from different schools that enjoy doing work experience at Emu Ridge on Kangaroo Island.  One School that has supported us for many years is the Mount Barker Waldorf School in Adelaide.

DSC_0235

These lovely girls enjoyed their work experience with us and had fun making the vapour discs, this was one of their projects. We always enjoy having the students, they are always a great help to us. Our business  is filled with diversity so they get to be involved in many different aspects of our business.

Ingredients:

  • 3 Cups Baking Soda
  • 1 Tsp Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil
  • 3 Drops Emu Ridge Lemon Myrtle Oil
  • 1 Cup Water
  • Bowl to mix it in
  • Silicone Molds or Lined Muffin Trays

 Directions:

1. Mix the water and baking soda together to form a thick paste.

2. Add the eucalyptus oil and lemon myrtle oil to the mixture.

3. Spoon the mixture into the molds.

Hint – Silicone muffin liners really are great, they pop right out with ease, make sure you line normal muffin tins with a liner, foil works best the paper ones can get stuck to the discs.

4. Let the discs set for 24 hours until the are dry and hard.

(if you cant wait that long you can also dry them in an oven, pre-heat it to 120c and pop them in for just over an hour. If you do this add the oils after the discs have cooled as the heat will evaporate the oils, they will still soak into the disc.)

The girls had fun packing them up, and we sold them in our shop. You could do this to and give them away as a gift or simply just put them in a jar or a ziplock back to use for your own personal use.

How to Use

Put a disc in the bottom of your shower when you get in. It will slowly dissolve releasing the eucalyptus oil into the shower and the steam from the shower will all rise together, helping to clear sinuses for when you have a cold or flu.

Hint – You are not only going to clear the sinuses, baking soda and eucalyptus oil will also clean and disinfect the bottom of the shower. Two jobs in one!  To buy our Eucalyptus Oil and Lemon Myrtle Oil, as well as many of our other great products, visit our Online Store

These are also great to pop into the toilet to clean and freshen!

Eucalyptus oil a natural floor cleaner

The best floor cleaner around, a teaspoon of Kangaroo Island Eucalyptus oil and warm water. Great for any floors, no streaks, degreaser, keeps away insects, kills bacteria and smells so fresh and clean, Clean the natural way it’s better for the environment and yourself.

There are many great benefits when it comes to cleaning naturally. Not only does it save money, but you also know exactly what you are using. I think people these days are looking for natural cleaning products in their homes. Our environment is filled with toxins and one of the biggest offenders is commercial household cleaners, they can cause allergies, rashes and can be very expensive.  I personally became allergic to perfumes, preservatives and certain chemicals about 15 years ago, I get rashes from many things so have to be very careful. This is when we started producing our own personal care natural product range.

At Emu Ridge we like to clean naturally and keep as many toxins as possible out of our home and workplace. Cleaning your floor with our Kangaroo Island Eucalyptus oil and water is completely non toxic so you feel safe using it around your children, pets and yourselves! Its also safer for the septic, its a 100% pure essential oil, cruelty fee and produced in Australia!

WHAT WE DO: Fill the mop bucket with about 1/4 full of warm water. Add a teaspoon of Kangaroo Island Eucalyptus oil and mop away, its great for wooden, slate, tiles and lino!

I have been told that you an also add 1/4 of a cup of vinegar as well but we just use the above recipe!

Another tip, fill a separate plastic mop bucket with hot water. This bucket can be used for rinsing out the mop, so you aren’t mopping the floors with dirty water.

Use a mop made of natural fibres, we use cotton.

Believe it or not, every time I employ a new staff member they don’t know how to mop a floor properly so here is some advise. Stand up straight when you mop so you don’t get a bad back. Spin the mop if it gathers up to much so that you cover a larger surface, it saves time. Lastly we only dry mop, it stops streaking, our new staff just slosh the water on the floor and it takes forever to dry. Wring your mop out so that you cant get any more water out of it at all, then dry mop the floor, if its a wooden floor go with the grain, again no streaks. Happy Cleaning!

Foot and Shoe Odor

Smelly Stinky Shoes be gone!

The smell of stinky shoes can be overwhelming and make you want to throw them away. Heres a few great tips to remove and prevent the odors for someone with stinky shoes!

Just pop in some Tea Bags!

To make the teabags even more efficient add a few drops of Tea Tree or Eucalyptus oil, you can also wipe the insides of your shoes on a regular basis to kill the bacteria that causes the odour.

Here’s another tip, its an old wives tale but apparently it works. Stuff the shoes with newspaper. That’s right. Newspaper! Leave over night and your shoes should be “stink-free” come morning!

Baking soda is also awesome. Stuff some old cotton socks with stuffing, add some baking soda its great for absorbing odors, seal with a rubber band or stitch the top closed. Ive heard kitty litter can be used the same way. Just leave these socks in your shoes when your not wearing them.

Dryer sheets with a few drops of Eucalyptus oil will absorb the odors. Tear them in half and leave in your shoes when you not wearing them.

If you can, wash them, pop them  in the washing machine add a teaspoon of Eucalyptus Oil with normal washing detergent and then dry them completely. From then on use the above tips and they will never stink again!!

Cheers, Bev

Hidden Chemicals in Laundry Detergent

It would be nice to think that the detergents we use have natural ingredients.  However, for the majority of detergents this is not the case.

A study done by the University of Washington on leading detergents showed that 99% of laundry detergents on the market contained cancer causing chemicals that are considered hazardous by the EPA.

However most of these ingredients in your leading laundry detergents are not even listed on the label.  Now that is scary.

Most detergent companies patent their formulas and are not legally required to disclose all the ingredients despite the fact that they are hazardous to health.  They hide these ingredients under umbrella labels such as “fragrance” or “flavorings” in the case of foods.

The deadliest of these chemicals is nonylphenol ethoxylate. It is a main ingredient in pesticides and is used to kill organisms.  It imitates the hormone estrogen within the body and is extremely harmful.  When this chemical along with others enter into your bloodstream through contact with your skin they cause serious damage to the body.  The  Journal of Pesticide Reform shows that these chemicals cause severe damage to heart and muscle function.

Another main ingredient not listed but contained in the majority of laundry detergents is formaldehyde.  The EPA has reported that formaldehyde causes cancer in both humans and animals.  Formaldehyde is the same chemical that is used to preserve dead bodies for dissection – not exactly the chemical you want to put into a living body.  In addition to this, it causes severe allergic reactions in the body and the gas can irritate your breathing and cause nausea and headaches.

Many of these ingredients are hidden under the broad label “fragrance”, not being required to list the specifics that go into it as proprietary formulas.  There was a big controversy that is still going on in food products with “the natural flavors” label for instance.  Many vegetarians are eating meat without knowing it and even aborted fetal cells and sweat glands of animals that are all hidden under the natural flavorings label.  It is quite disturbing to say the least that companies are not required to disclose all their ingredients and put the worst ones under these categories.

These chemicals from your laundry detergent absorb through your skin and accumulate in the body over time.  There are remnants of them on the clothes that you wear that get taken in daily.  If you have irritable skin from your clothes or headaches when wearing your clothes, this can be the result of the chemicals in the modern brand laundry detergents which are not disclosed on the bottle.  Over time these hidden chemcials weaken your immune system.  Skin cancer is on the rise these days and this is yet another reason why as everyone is being poisoned today from so many toxins around them and in what they take into their bodies as a result.

The next time you stop to smell the laundry detergent, don’t forget you might actually be inhaling formaldehyde and these other toxic chemicals into the body.  Removing chemicals from your daily life and that of your loved ones is essential to good health.  Knowing what goes into and on your body is fundamental to being healthy and happy.

Homemade Glass Cleaner

There are many great benefits when it comes to making your own cleaning products. Not only do they help you save money, but you also know exactly what’s in them. Our environment is filled with toxins and one of the biggest offenders in the toxin department is household cleaners.  At Emu Ridge we like to clean naturally and keep as many toxins as possible out of our home and workplace. This cleaner is completely non toxic so you feel safe using them around your children, pets and yourselves!

This homemade glass cleaner recipe is a simple, easy to make solution that uses everyday ingredients from around your home and works effectively. All you need is:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon dish washing liquid
  • 8 drops eucalyptus oil

P1040589E

Simply combine all the ingredients in an empty spray bottle and give your mixture a shake and it is ready to go! An old glass bottle is also great, we have a 1 litre glass apple cider vinegar bottle, you just need to get a spray top that fits it. We recommend using Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil, but our Lemon Myrtle can also be used, it has similar properties and a different fragrance. (Hint – recycled bottles don’t last long as Eucalyptus oil disolves some plastic parts inside the pump. We have found it best to buy a pump from our local Jasol agent they last forever)

P1040593E

Why Use Eucalyptus Oil Instead Of Other Oils?

Stops Streaking: Everybody hates those annoying streaks that are commonly left behind after washing your windows. Using eucalyptus oil in your cleaning mixture helps to prevent those annoying streak marks on your windows.

Stops Mirrors Fogging Up: There is nothing more annoying than going to look in the mirror and its all fogged up! Wiping down your mirrors with eucalyptus oil helps prevent mirrors from fogging up.

Helps Prevent Germs: This is handy for when you have dirty and grimy glass sliding doors. Children tend to put their hands and mouth all over the glass when opening sliding doors, so eucalyptus oil is great for stopping the spread of germs.

P1040595E

The dish washing detergent in this cleaner removes detergent residues and this can can be omitted once you have been cleaning with your natural cleaner. This cleaner has a strong smell but this will completely disappear once it dries. We use old newspapers to wipe the area we are cleaning, but you can use a microfiber cloth or old t-shirts work well to. Just avoid paper towels as they tend to leave lint on them.

Happy toxic free cleaning 🙂

All-Natural Flea Collar & Flea Powder

The chemicals on flea collars are definitely not something we feel good about at Emu Ridge, especially on dogs and around kids who are playing with them and patting them!

Many dogs are also very sensitive to commercial chemical flea collars, but respond well to natural flea collars made with essential oils.

This homemade flea collar recipe is a natural and healthy alternative because it uses essential oils rather than the toxic chemicals found in store bought flea collars.

How to make your “All-Natural Flea Collar”:

You can use this on a leather, material or  fabric collar. To make the mixture, you will need to combine:

Ingredients

(NOTE: The above recipe is for a medium size dog. For smaller dogs, use 1-2 drops and for larger dogs, use 4 drops)

Procedure

Put the mixture on your dog’s collar, leave to permeate through for a few hours, and then put the collar on your dog. You can repeat this process once per month. (Depending on where you live and how often your dog is in flea-infested environments). Make sure you remove when the dog is swimming or having a bath.

You can also make a spray on flea deterrent using this recipe plus add 250ml of apple cider vinegar!

We also sell an All-Natural Flea Powder, which is great for deterring all those nasty pests without any of those harmful chemicals. See more info about our flea powder see below.

flea-powder-OG

We hate the idea of putting any sort of toxic chemical flea treatment on our dog. Apparently those products are the number 1 cause of pet poisonings.  Did you know that on those commercial flea and tick repellents, there’s a big warning to not let it come into contact with human skin. So somehow it’s ok to put all over my dog?!! I don’t think so!

Ingredient List and Benefits of our Natural Flea Powder:

Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth:

Also known as Diatomaceous Earth or DE, this substance is composed of fine, fossilized remains of aquatic organisms called diatoms. Diatoms are one of the most commonly found phytoplanktons in aquatic environments. Due to diatoms being silica-based, these DE particles are very sharp on a microscopic level. This lets them puncture an insect’s exoskeleton and cause death by dehydration. For humans and pets, however, DE particles feel like a fine baby powder and the food grade, freshwater variety of DE is harmless to them.

NOTE: Make sure the DE you get is “Food Grade.” Other varieties like Crystallized or Filter Grade DE can cause lung damage if breathed in over long periods of time. Food Grade DE, however, is processed differently and is safe for human consumption. That being said, if you foresee yourself using it for a long period of time (like on your yard), it’s probably best to wear a dust mask.

Neem Powder:

Neem is an herb that has been used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. It’s a highly effective insect repellant and contains many compounds that affect insects negatively. For instance, the active ingredient  Azadirachtin inhibits the metamorphosis of insect larvae, which means larvae never get to develop into the next generation of fleas. Another compound, called salannin, has been shown to be as effective at repelling biting insects as DEET.

Yarrow Powder:

Yarrow powder has been used by herbalists to treat wounds since ancient times. Many cultures regard it as sacred due to its healing properties. Yarrow is especially effective at treating skin inflammations, as well as having antimicrobial and pain relieving properties. Pets with flea bites often get secondary infections, and yarrow helps to ward off germs while soothing irritated skin.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil:

Our Eucalyptus oil is a natural bug deterrent and like neem, has also shown itself to be as effective as DEET when it comes to repelling insects. It’s also antiseptic properties to heal after being bitten.

Directions:

Apply from head to tail along your pets spine in dry conditions. Brush your pets fur going the opposite direction so the powder comes in contact with the skin. Avoid the eyes and nose. Rub the powder on the belly and legs. Try to get the flea powder on as much skin as you can.

Brushing the fur in the opposite direction and applying the flea powder with a cosmetic puff works really well. Fleas seem to like the tail, the area right above the tail and the belly/groin area so make sure to pay extra attention to those areas to get them well covered.

How often to apply flea powder?

To use this as a general repellent (with no serious flea infestation), applying once a month during active flea season (end of spring/summer) is sufficient. If the pet gets a bath or gets wet, it will need to be reapplied.

If you have a flea infestation:

You will need to apply more often, depending on how bad of an infestation you are dealing with. I applied every other day until I saw no more traces of fleas (now I’m just using it as maintenance). Some are successful with applying as little as once a week, but others need it more often – it just depends on the level of infestation. Also remember to reapply if your pet gets wet (important!).

If you have a flea infestation, you will also need to apply this flea powder to your floors, windowsills, door sills, pet bedding, sofa, etc. Focus your efforts where your pet spends the most amount of time, since fleas and their eggs will be the most concentrated in those areas. Just apply a light dusting to the areas in your house and leave it there overnight. Vacuum in the morning or sometime the next day.

This flea powder works amazingly, BUT, it will not work overnight if you have a flea infestation. You must be diligent about applying it to your pet AND applying the powder to your home and vacuuming at least once per week for 4 weeks in a row to get rid of an infestation.

You can even use this flea powder it in your yard to repel and kill fleas, ticks, spiders, ants, mosquitos, etc!

You can also leave a little bit of flea powder in your door and window sills  to prevent spiders, ants and other bugs from entering.

Has your pet ever had fleas? What worked for you? Have you tried any natural options before? Let us all know!
