Upgrading our life & Business at Emu Ridge

Larry and I are proud of what we have achieved since our inception in 1991. We love what we do, but there comes a time when you realise you’re getting older and its time for some changes!

We believe its time to have a better quality of life and to enjoy our hard work and not let our business consume us.  Its time to make life easier for us our family and our staff!

(And don’t worry we are both still working! Hopefully not quite as many hours as we have been once everything is in place. You can’t get rid of us that easily!!)

We were recently able to access the Kangaroo Island Commissioner’s Building Better Regions Funds In-Business Grant  which contributed to 50% of our recent business review. We haven’t reviewed our business properly for over 20 years!! We were also lucky to have the invaluable expertise of Andy from AL Assist complete our review for us, covering all areas in our business with a view to identifying opportunities for efficiency through automation and better business management systems. The review also discussed succession planning for our future with our kids in our business and retirement etc. Things that are always on on the “gonna do” plan that never get done!!

We are very happy to have already implemented many changes, such as a POS (Point of Sale) inventory management system and improved online order and mail systems. We can already see the benefits from implementing these changes, with better performance and productivity. We hope our online customers see an improvement too!

It has been a challenge for all of us! (so apologies if you get sent a few extra emails than you should!! Please bear with us over this transition thanks!!) Its been great to learn new systems, stimulating our minds and hopefully our performance and productivity in the future.

Our Manager Ella

Ella, our manager, has enjoyed the challenge involved in the setting up of our new systems, incorporating inventory management for our retail shop and e-commerce activities and the integration of our accounting system, to become fully streamlined. It’s great to be able to see everything at a glance. This will also help us look after our online customers better and improve time management.

Father and son effort here! Tristan and Larry working hard. Its been a time consuming exercise bar-coding all of our products, but worth the effort as scanning saves time!

My Sister Coralie and Daugher Mel going cross-eyed counting stock ready to barcode!

They reckon its time for a drink! (It had been a very long day and night!)

I hope you have enjoyed watching us grow over the years!

DIY Eucalyptus Shower Discs

Shower discs are a great way to clear your sinuses as well as keeping  your bathroom smelling fresh. These all-natural eucalyptus vapour discs are simple and easy to make, they are also non-toxic, so they are safe to use around children and pets.

They are great in the toilet too!

Each year we love having children from different schools that enjoy doing work experience at Emu Ridge on Kangaroo Island.  One School that has supported us for many years is the Mount Barker Waldorf School in Adelaide.

These lovely girls enjoyed their work experience with us and had fun making the vapour discs, this was one of their projects. We always enjoy having the students, they are always a great help to us. Our business  is filled with diversity so they get to be involved in many different aspects of our business.

Ingredients:

  • 3 Cups Baking Soda

  • 1 Tsp Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil

  • 3 Drops Emu Ridge Lemon Myrtle Oil

  • 1 Cup Water

  • Bowl to mix it in

  • Silicone Molds or Lined Muffin Trays

 Directions:

1. Mix the water and baking soda together to form a thick paste.

2. Add the eucalyptus oil and lemon myrtle oil to the mixture.

3. Spoon the mixture into the molds.

Hint – Silicone muffin liners really are great, they pop right out with ease, make sure you line normal muffin tins with a liner, foil works best the paper ones can get stuck to the discs.

4. Let the discs set for 24 hours until the are dry and hard.

(if you cant wait that long you can also dry them in an oven, pre-heat it to 120c and pop them in for just over an hour. If you do this add the oils after the discs have cooled as the heat will evaporate the oils, they will still soak into the disc.)

The girls had fun packing them up, and we sold them in our shop. You could do this to and give them away as a gift or simply just put them in a jar or a ziplock back to use for your own personal use.

How to Use

Put a disc in the bottom of your shower in a corner away from the main water flow when you get in. It will slowly dissolve releasing the eucalyptus oil into the shower and the steam from the shower will all rise together, helping to clear sinuses for when you have a cold or flu.

You don’t have to wait until you have a cold to use these either!  Essential oils are proven to reduce stress, with so many of us now including aromatherapy into everyday life.

Hint – You are not only going to clear the sinuses, baking soda and eucalyptus oil will also clean and disinfect the bottom of the shower. Two jobs in one!  To buy our Eucalyptus Oil and Lemon Myrtle Oil, as well as many of our other great products, visit our Online Store

These are also great to pop into the toilet to clean and freshen!

DIY Vapor Rub all natural or buy online at Emu Ridge on Kangaroo Island

I became allergic to perfumes and preservatives many years ago and this prompted me to develop our natural range of products for Emu Ridge.

Our Vapor Rub was specifically made for babies and children as a decongestant for colds and flu. Just massage into the chest area, on the throat, on the back between the shoulder blades & on your feet, its great for sinus relief. Adults can add a few extra drops of Eucalyptus oil to the mixture to make it stronger.

Our Vapor Rub is available directly from our online shop Ingredients: Olive Oil, Coconut Oil & Bees Wax. Essential Oils: Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Thyme & Clove.

Our products are all made in small batches and they are lovingly made, bottled and labeled by hand by a real person. This is Sandra, she has been making natural products and skincare for decades.

Do you ever read the ingredients label? Sometimes, the things we trust to use with our family can have some surprising unhealthy additives.

Vapor rub helps with symptoms of a common cold or minor aches and pains of the muscles and joints. You can purchase vapor rub in shops, but many of these products contain toxic ingredients — such as camphor — that are harmful to your health.

Our Eucalyptus essential oil functions as an expectorant, helping to cleanse the body of toxins, making it great for relieving symptoms of the cold and flu. It has also proven helpful with sinus and respiratory problems.

DIY –

If you have nothing in your medicine cupboard. You can make a natural alternative, just mix about 10 drops of Emu Ridge eucalyptus oil with 25ml of Olive, coconut or Emu Oil and rub on your chest. You will be breathing easy in no-time, the natural way! Remember its great for rubbing on the bottom of your feet before you go to bed if you have a cold to!

Below is a great natural recipe you can also make at home from Dr Axe if you have the time.

I hope you have enjoyed our post, stay healthy ~ Bev~

Not often people have the time to send images or give us a testimonial. We do receive alot of reviews on Emu Oil and how it has helped people. I wanted to share this one from Heather in the UK.
“I used your emu oil for 4 days on my son’s eczema. It is AMAZING. My aunt brought it back for me as a souvenir. He is only 4 1/2 months old and I have tried other hypoalergenic creams and lotions and this was the only thing that has worked. And all in 4 days!!!”
Thanks Heather much appreciated, and so glad it has helped your son.
For privacy i have blurred the babys face and cut this image other than that is is untouched, amazing!
